[paper] Advocating the Potential of Artificial Intelligence for Syndrome Discovery in Syndromic Surveillance Systems

I’m happy to announce that the first article from my PhD has been published! 🎉

Given all the hype surrounding AI, the impression is that either everyone is already using it or that all fields of knowledge can use it quickly and easily.

In this scoping review, Aleksander, Alex, Georges, and I answer the question: how has AI been used in epidemiological surveillance in syndromic surveillance?

Here’s a heads-up: most of the solutions are concentrated in the Global North, are text-based and in English, and use supervised machine learning techniques. This landscape runs counter to surveillance that is prepared for the unpredictable, is global, and prioritizes privacy and state-of-the-art features.

Enjoy the read!
